Spider’s Camera Holster gives you a new way to carry around your DSLR
By Emily Price
One problem that professional photographers sometimes encounter is neck pain from carrying around their favorite SLR using a neck strap. While neck straps can be convenient, one company has created a new holster option that could help reduce that neck pain and help you carry your SLR around in a whole new way.
The Spider camera holster is a holster that attaches to your belt and allows you to connect your camera to your waist rather than around your neck. Te holster requires you to attach a blot like device to the bottom of your camera, much like you would a tripod head. When you’re done using your camera you simply slide the camera into the holster and continue about your business.
At first glace I actually thought this idea was pretty cool. I do concert photography pretty regularly, and would love the ability to attach one camera to my waist while I was shooting with another. The more I think about it however the more awful this contraptions sounds.
If you’re using a larger lens camera, the lens will inevitably bounce against your leg as you walk, and frankly weigh your belt down to a level that I might be concerned about my pants taking a dive on that particular side of my body.
While it might be useful while you were stationary, If you were to wear the holster while you were walking around (which is when I typically use my neck strap) then I could see the camera easily getting slammed against poles, walls, and other obstructions as I walk by. With a camera that is worth several thousands of dollars, I think I would rather keep it in front of my face where I can see it rather than strapped to my side where I will probably run it into things.
Would you use the Spider Holster, or do you have the same concerns I do?
