Eye-Fi releases a Pro line of memory cards
By Emily Price
If you take a lot of pictures, either professionally or on an consumer level chances are you’ve been exposed to the Eye-Fi line of memory cards at some point in your travels. Eye-Fi cards allows you to save pictures to the card and then wirelessly transmit those pictures to your computer or a online photo or video sharing site. Now the company has created a new Pro line of cards that can do a little more. The cards can be used for both photo and video files and can also establish an ad hoc connection to your computer without having to be near your wireless router or a hotspot.
The Eye-Fi Pro cards are wireless-enabled memory cards that can not only transfer your pictures to your computer to a sharing site, but can also transfer RAW images. I tend to take a fairly substantial amount of pictures fairly often. Eye-Fi cards make it substantial easier to deal with all those pictures without having to deal with all the wires coming out of my computer. While it doesn’t take that long, connecting my camera to my computer always does seem like a bit of a hassle.
The ability to wirelessly transfer RAW images is pretty huge. RAW is a preferred format for most professional photographers,. by being able to work with RAW Eye-Fi opens themselves up to be used by quite a few more people.
I’ve never used Eye-Fi cards for video, but I really like the idea of doing so. Much like the hassle associated with attaching a camera to my computer, camcorders pose relatively the same problem, except seemingly much larger. For someone who uploads a lot of video to YouTube or another video sharing site purchasing an Eye-Fi card seems like pretty much a no brainer.
Do any of you use Eye-Fi cards? What do you think about the new Pro line and the ability to transfer RAW pictures?
